Archive for the “Gutter Growing” Category

Here is the second installment of the Remote Gardener Video Podcast. Please enjoy, comment, ridicule. This episode is a short about the plants that we have grown in rain gutters this year. The one that I didn’t mention was peas. If you look in the archives of our blog you can see images of the 8 foot tall sweet and snap peas that we grew in 4 inch deep gutters.

This is probably the shortest one we have made. Next week we will be posting information about Solexx and progress on our newest greenhouse. Future episodes will show the entire process of planting, heating and harvesting from rain gutters.

Over the past few months I have been putting up pictures of the greenhouse. I have been trying to show everyone how much the plants have grown. One thing I realized I was missing was up close images of the plants. Since harvest is tomorrow for the farmers market Saturday I thought I should grab some shots to show in detail not only how pretty these plants are but how fantastic they look up close.

I love this purple Mesclun Lettuce. It has a lite cabbage taste.

Isn't that purple just an awesome color?

White Helios Radishes. Yes, those are golf ball sized but not woody.

Whiet Helios Radish the size of a cue ball. Not bad for gutter grown huh?

This is probably my favorite thing we have grown so far this year. Italian Rocket tastes almost nutty in flavor with a bit of zest. A great addition to any salad.

Lettuce with some peas in the middle.

Sweet Peas finally flowering.

Snap Peas flowering. We hope to be able to harvest these in about 2-3 weeks.

I will continue to add more pictures as the season progresses so stay tuned for updates.

Well, our gutter experiment has been very successful. We have radishes the size of golf balls. We have 4+ feet tall pea plants (finally flowering) and lots of lettuces.

My favorite is the White Radishes and Italian Rocket. I was concerned about the radishes because folks say that they get woody when they get big. I think that because these grew slow and the temperature stayed on the cool side they came our rich and soft. We uprooted a few the other night and had a great time eating the harvest. Italian rocket is the bomb. I have found a new green to fall in love with all over again. It does have a bittery nutty flavor which you don’t expect from a green. If you haven’t tried growing this you should this season.

The Farmers Market starts in town this weekend so many of our radishes will be harvested along with much of the lettuce. Those systems will be replaces with our now 3 inch tall tomato and pepper plants. This entire greenhouse will be converted into a tomato sucker nursery. This way we can pull suckers off and put them directly in the new greenhouse giving them a good growth boost once they get moved.

Our planted peat pots are being out grown quickly so we need to get them into something with nutrients. You will see some major changes to this greenhouse starting next week.

Radishes, peas and lettuce growing in gutters ready for harvest. Note the oak tree which was taken out 3 years ago still trying to come back. 3 years and still a growing stump. I felt bad enough killing the tree to put up the greenhouse. Now I have to feel bad every year as I take out whatever it tries to sprout out.

Those pea plants are finally flowering after getting to a hight of 4-5 feet. Note the trays on the floor currently holding our future generations of Tomatoes and Peppers.
