We have reached the point where even our awesome Solexx is not keeping the greenhouse warm enough. We could keep going through the end of the year but with temperatures in the teens we decided not to heat the greenhouse this year and let everything die of natural causes.
The best part is that over the winter we are going to be rebuilding our entire hydroponics system and should get about 3 times the harvest. We kept the system rather small this season but should be in full production mode next year. In the end after eating all year we still had about 74 lbs of produce which we pulled from the plants before the freeze hit too hard. You can see how pretty it all was at left.
We considered switching the entire system over to growing winter crops like cabbage, lettuce or peas but instead we are rebuilding and getting ready for spring.
Many of the veggies we pulled were not fully ripe so we have done experimenting from pickling a lot of things and BBQ for the rest. There is no doubt that we created some awesome salsas and will do even better next year.
On another note the hydroponics systems worked beyond expectations. We will be testing over winter to make sure the hydroponics systems can meet the demands we are placing on them.
The best news is that I was able to save 9 plants. I just unplugged the 2 liter bottles from the greenhouse and then moved them into the hydroponics system in my home’s sun room. The move could not have gone easier. This would be hard to do with a tomato plant but with peppers it worked fantastic. Since peppers take longer to get started, keeping them through the winter should really help out next year. These 9 plants should give us a great start to spring and we will have peppers year round.
We will be sending out a mailing list to everyone once we get started on the new season. For now, know that we are adding cameras to the greenhouse so that you will be able to get a live video stream of our operation. We will be selling co-ops for each rack of 6 plants which you will be able to view grow online. If you are interested in getting some of our veggies drop me a line at greg@remotegardener.com and I will send you the details. We hope to also have individual plants available for purchase. You view it online and we do the rest. We feed the plants and harvest when the times comes and deliver your crop to your door. What a great way to see and know where your food comes from.
Have a great New Year,
The Remote Team.
